Membership

I know you hear me, but are you really listening?
Whether we realize it or not, we all give away our innermost thoughts through everyday conversation and non-verbal actions. Listen for clues when recruiting new members—what they say may be a hint as to why they want to become a Soroptimist. For example, are they looking to join for fun, or to make new friends, or are they searching for an opportunity to volunteer and do a good deed? Check out this tip to see how you can emphasize what your club can offer to meet their needs!

Program

Women’s Opportunity Awards
Did you see President Cheri’s video announcing the changes to our signature program? Learn more at region conferences. The changes will go live on May 15, when the program will formally be called Live Your Dream: Education & Training Awards for Women.

Twenty-eight women joined our group of at-large award recipients this year! Thank you to the members and LiveYourDream.org supporters who helped select these recipients, who do not live in an area with a Soroptimist club. And thank you to the regions for including these recipients in their region-level judging. Together we are reaching more women with this life-changing award. Read a wonderful letter from one of this year’s at-large recipients.

Did your club recipient sign a media consent form? Remember, you must have your recipient’s permission before you share her information with the public.

New Girl Program
Are you holding a project-planning meeting for the 2014-2015 club year? Don’t forget to save time to start planning for the new girl program. The club planning toolkit, along with the name and design, will be announced at convention in Vancouver.

UN CSW Meeting
In March, Soroptimists from around the world joined other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City to be the voice of civil society during the 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW58). Click here to read a full report from SIA past president and SI programme director, Sharon Fisher.

Fundraising

International (Future) Women’s Day
In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, Soroptimists from 10 different countries and territories throughout our federation helped us raise almost $7,000 to support girls’ educational and career goals. Thank you for everything you do to make the world a better place for women and girls.

Live Your Dream Art Contest, Taiwan Entries
We were disheartened to learn that all of the Live Your Dream art contest submissions from Taiwan Region were lost in the mail and returned to Taiwan without making it to SIA headquarters before the December 31 deadline. Because the children worked so hard on their art, we decided to hold a mini-contest to pick finalists in each of the four categories. Stay tuned for voting information on SIA’s Facebook page!
