Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan)
On Friday, November 8, super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) hit the Philippines and will most likely be the deadliest disaster to ever affect the country. Two million people in 41 provinces were affected. More than 23,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed and the death toll is expected to reach 10,000 or more. Although 800,000 people were evacuated prior to the storm, many evacuation centers could not withstand the winds and water surges. Soroptimist has established a dedicated disaster fund to collect donations to support women and girls as they seek to recover and rebuild following the disaster.

We have been in contact with Governor Minda of the Philippines region and she will update us on the status of our members in the Philippines. Our thoughts and prayers are with our Soroptimist members and all those suffering from this devastating disaster.
